Lucy: So I I need to ask you something. What makes a layout manufacturable?
Following all the right rules. Simple answer.
Now what are the right rules? That’s the complex part.
Basically it’s following all the right rules, and there is no one set of rules that works for every board.
A fine example what’s the size of the hole? What’s the smallest hole you can put in the board? There’s sizes from size four to size huge because it depends how many layers it is, thickness of copper, if it’s glass two, if it’s glass three, what kind of plating you want, a whole bunch of different answers for something as simple as what size hole goes in the board.
Which is true with what’s the minimum line width? Well, minimum line width is one thing if it’s you know half ounce copper, it’s a different width if it’s one ounce copper, different if it’s two ounce copper, different it’s three ounce. That’s the problem that customers have. They call up and say well what’s the minimum line width? But they don’t tell you the other six questions that have to be asked and answered first.
Lucy: I noticed something you always say six questions, is that a random number?
No no it’s it’s you can’t ask a question because you don’t know what the rest of the board is about and what the rest of the things going on. Yeah. A board that goes out of space has completely different rules than a board that’s in space, you know, because of outgassing.
There’s no there’s no atmosphere, so the boards dissolve in the absence, you know, out in space. And so things like the silk screen and solder mask, you can’t have them on the board because the silk screen and the solder mask literally dissolves in space. There’s no gravity to hold it together. So it starts coming apart basically, in layman’s terms.
Yeah. So it’s called outgassing. So the types of materials you use, all that stuff, all different. You want a board that’s waterproof, it’s one thing.
You want it to dissipate heat, it’s a different thing. So so the minimum hole size would change even on just materials things. Yeah. So there really is no simple answers, because each board’s different kind of a thing.
