How to Determine the Impedance of a Circuit

Impedance impacts how signals propagate through the board, how power is exchanged between components, and how signals leak into undesired sections of a PCB. There are several methods for determining a circuit’s impedance, but they don’t necessarily yield realistic results unless you include the appropriate parasitic elements in your models.

Goodmorning, I am an Electronic Engineering student at Università Politecnica delle Marche, in Italy. I am currently writing my thesis about printed circuits boards with a particular focus on differential pairs in stripline structures and differential impedance . I noticed that your impedance calculator gives accurate results, and I understand that it employs a 2D Maxwell’s equations solver. I would be interested in learning more about this topic. Could you kindly share any references in which I could find the process that the solver follows to obtain the result?

Hi, Glad to know you are using the impedance tool and finding it useful for your research. Unfortunately, we cannot share the internal workings of our calculator.
The tool numerically solves the 2D Maxwell’s EM equations. You will find literature in IEEE and other journals on different methods of solving the equation.
