Adding more layers to PCB stack up

I have a design of 6-layers in which I might need to add one more layer to separate power plane. I know that the PCB stack up need to be symmetric and I need to add two more layers, not just one.

I am wondering about the price difference with two additional layers used as power planes. There will be no routing on the two additional layers. Will it cost much to go from 6-layers to 8-layers ?

I expect that somebody from Sierra will reply but I have read somewhere that to add 2 layers might add 20% to board cost. If you want, go to any PCB fab website that has oneline quoting and plug in some fake numbers to get a response. It will give you quick rough numbers when considering to increased the PCB specs.

Thanks for replying. We’re currently busy at IPC APEX!

Our designers will reply soon.

Yes, the price for 8 layer board is more than 6 layer board. If the board thickness is not changing with addition of two layers, then the core thicknesses will reduce.

Thank you for comment.

The board thickness will remain the same 1.6 mm. Only the dielectric core height is reduced to adjust two additional layers.
