The tradition of using electric lights for Christmas trees dates back to the late 19th century. In 1882, Edward H. Johnson, an associate of inventor Thomas Edison, decorated the first Christmas tree with electric lights in his New York City home. This early display of electric Christmas lights paved the way for the festive lighting displays we enjoy today.
