Better DFM tip: Three checks to run before submission

I’ve seen plenty of PC boards that were electrically sound but still ended up on hold bc of few manufacturability issues that could have been caught in 5 mins.

Before you release a design these are 3 things you must always double-check:

1. Are your design rules actually manufacturable?

Don’t just trust that the CAD tool is happy.

Verify things like trace/space, annular ring, drill sizes, and drill-to-copper clearance against the fab house capability you’re designing for. One overlooked violation can turn into an engineering question or a respin.

2. Did you package everything correctly?

You’d be surprised how often delays come down to missing or incomplete manufacturing files.

Always make sure the Gerbers (or ODB++), drill files, fabrication drawing, and if possible IPC-356 netlist are included. A netlist comparison is one of the easiest ways to catch opens or shorts before anyone starts building the board.

3. Take one last look at solder mask and silkscreen.

These don’t usually get the attention they deserve.

Silkscreen over pads, missing solder mask clearances, or tiny mask dams are all things that can slow a job down or require CAM edits. They’re easy to catch before you upload the design.
